How to store your broom(s)

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

broom storage DIYup side down, of course. Never just fling them into a broom cupboard, it will break all the bristles and next time you use them, you have broom hair all over your floor. This is easily made in 1/2 an hour. Just take any board, melamine, MDF, particle board… and hammer some long nails in the right position. Hang it in the broom cupboard or, as this one from our laundry on a free wall in the laundry.

If you are not into the DIY why not buy one from Howard’s storage?

I am oiling my jewellery

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Hubby decided to renovate walls and ceiling of the bathroom on the weekend– without notice, and AFTER I MOPPED THE FLOOR IN THE WHOLE HOUSE!!
Living in an old house, there is always more renovating work once you get started, because some of the render just basically fell in his face. So we took off what came easily – and decided to do the same all around the hose and then call for my favourite handymen to ‘fix it’.
This is why I have been oiling my jewellery today, because there was a patch of render coming down just above where my pieces hang on the wall. You see, my dad makes my jewellery – I wear almost nothing else. He even made our wedding bands! He uses silver, tin, old baking trays, leather, pebbles and lots and lots of time to come up with the (for me) most beautiful, earthy, ethnic looking pieces. A lot of them are pendants on a leather string – hence the oiling. The drilled and cut up baking tray loves a bit of lubricant, too.
In the process, I decluttered a bit – but it’s hard to let go of handmade things for me – so I might ask my kids what they think about wearing a bracelet.

Don’t hide them

This is one of a pair of painted perforated metal sheets I use to hang my jewellery. The holes fit a M4  screw and I designed it so I can hang long pieces at the top and store bracelets and earrings at the bottom. I have had it for more than 15 years and I love it because I can see my bling even when I am not wearing it.

updates anyone?

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Yesterday I, together with my blog admin person,  updated to a much newer version of this blog software. Mine was so old, it was almost impossible to find a plugin to save the content (in case anything goes wrong with the update!)

Luckily nothing did go wrong, and I hope that the other important plugin, the one that automatically posts to my Facebook page is working.

That’s the sole purpose for this post – to check it out. Oh, and I better find a photo, too!!!

Storing Gift Wrap

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Here is an organising idea that should be crucial to implement this time of the year!

Look Up
Use wire to make a space to store gift wrap rolls against the ceiling, rather than
cluttering up the floor.

Designer Info

In 2003 Polish-born Olaf Sialkowski came to Australia to study fashion design following four years of European law studies in Germany. He decided to “put down the wig” and to follow his passion for design.
On his mother’s side of the family there is a long history in the fashion and tailoring industry.  His great great grand father owned one of Poland’s premiere tailoring and textile companies.  Olaf’s father, a highly acclaimed Polish contemporary artist, showed his work at Warsaw renowned art galleries, Zapiecek and Lazienki, as well as in Vienna and Bielfeld (Germany) exhibitions alongside Picasso.  Growing up under the skirt tails of his Grandmother’s sewing machine, young Olaf designed and made clothes for his Teddy Bears. Together with his father
he created numerous pieces of furniture in wood and metal to enhance their unconventional family home.
In 2006 he graduated from the highly regarded East Sydney Fashion College and has been working in the fashion industry as designer and stylist ever since.

Every bathroom had its own theme: built environment, space, ocean, rainforest. The main colours used in the murals reflected those of the new partitions.
I refined my workshop skills over the course of the weeks and the results where brilliant. With help of the whole school community, teachers, parents we eventually finished more than 50 lineal meters of very colorful tiling.

A Project with a difference

Friday, June 18th, 2010

This was a little different organising project – but different is good and I learnt a lot:
Last year I was asked to be part of a toilet refurbishment team for a primary school which had secured funds from the state government. To get the kids accountable for their own toilets we decided to get them as involved as possible and so we conducted workshops with every single class to teach them how to make mosaics from broken tiles. I thought 14 classes over a couple of weeks. We made them aware that famous Architect had done brilliant things with tiles. There are public toilets in the north of Auckland which are a tourist attraction. http://www.pbase.com/philinnz/kawakawa_toilets And Antonio Gaudi last century in Barcelona http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/gaudi/park-guell.html
